Shujaa sail into Africa Sevens quarter finals

National Sevens team yesterday progressed to the quarter finals of the ongoing Africa Sevens after registering emphatic wins in their pool A matches at the Jemmel Stadium in Tunisia.

As they sought to end a two-year drought having last won the continental title in 2015, Shujaa beat Botswana 49-0 in their first match before sealing a quarter final place with a 41-0 victory over Morocco.Against Botswana, debutant Daniel Taabu put up a man of the match performance as he scored two tries and seven conversions to get Kenya off to a winning start.

Shujaa took a commanding 35-0 lead at the breather as Taabu converted Cyprian Kuto’s try before he crossed the whitewash between the sticks for Kenya’s second.

Kenya were dealt a numerical blow when Eliakim Kichoi was sent to the sin-bin.

Despite playing a man less, Kenya who proved to be superior physically continued to stamp their authority as Homeboyz duo of Leonard Mugaisi and Michael Wanjala inked their names on the scoresheet with converted tries.

Taabu and Kuto would then seal their braces as the sides headed to the half-time talk.

After resumption, the East Africans continued to assert their dominance as captain Herman Humwa had his try ruled out before Alvin Otieno and Derrick Keyoga completed the rout.

Keyoga continued with his try scoring heroics as he scored three tries in the side’s second match against Morocco.

Daniel Taabu, Charles Omondi,Cyprian Kuto and Kenyatta University scrumhalf Brian Wahinya were also on the scoresheet in the huge win.
