Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC)are this year’s overall winners of the ninth edition of the Water Services Companies' Sports organization (Wasco) games 2018 which ended in Nyeri on Friday.
Nakuru Water and Sanitation Services Company (Nawassco) and host Nyeri Water Services company (Nyewasco) were declared second and third runners-up during the closing ceremony held at Kabiru-ini showgrounds, Nyeri county and graced by Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga.
Nairobi Water claimed most of the trophies in the major games including the ball games and athletics while Nakuru Water (Nawassco) shined in the indoor games that included; successfully defending their Chess title four years in a row.
Successfully defending their game of pool title, for the second year against their erstwhile rivals Eldoret Water by 3-2 frames in a suspense filled finals.
Nyewassco also defended their Chess title for the second year running, against their nemesis Nairobi Water and went on to claim the Ajua title in their final game Nairobi Water.
Nyewasco claimed Badminton overall title as well, with strong performances in volleyball, netball among others.
The games which started on Tuesday, saw 25 teams participate in various disciplines which included ball games, board games, golf, athletics as well as cultural and folk dances which were featured under a special category.
On the final day; Nairobi Water swept almost all the long distance races in the men category, thanks to international runner Daniel Gachui, the 2013/2014 Indonesia’s Bali marathon winner.
“Am grateful to God for allowing me to perform well today, the weather too has been favorable,” said Gachui after winning the 10,000 marathon after clocking 32:47: 19.
Gachui, who trains at the Henry Wanyoike foundation training camp in Limuru, went on to claim the 5,000 meters’ race in a time of 15:43:30 before claiming the 1,500 meters’ race, in a time of 4:10:88.
“I have been preparing for the Bali marathon that is coming up on the ninth of September. I have a lot to do before then. I would like to better my personal best time of 28:58: 79 in the event God willing, it’s a tall order but am optimistic that it’s achievable” he added
In the 100 meters’ finals; Nairobi Water Festus Waita won with a time 11:51. In the ladies 200 meters’ finals; Nairobi Water’s Grace Ndungu took the race with a time of 13:37 against her team mate Gladys Chilo who clocked 13:76.
Thika Water sprinter Josephine Njoki cleared the 200-meter race in 28:22 to prevail as Eldoret Waters’ Emmanuel Kiplagat’s 22:09 was faster than Thika Water’s’ duo of Moses Koech (23:09) and Bernard Okinyi (24:25) to triumph in the 200-meter race.
Thika Water were the overall golf title winners, Nyeri Water Services Company (Nyewasco) coming in second with Eldoret Water Services settling for third place in the game which was played at the par 72, Nyeri golf club.
Karungo wa Thang’wa, Kiambu Youth Affairs, Sports and Communication executive who graced the closing ceremony, appealed to the game organizers to include swimming competition in the event for relevance to the services offered by the water companies.
Next year games will be will be hosted by the Embu Water and Sanitation Company in Embu county at various venues that will include; Moi stadium, Kangaru High School, Izaak Walton hotel and the Panesia hotel which according to Embu Water Managing Director Engineer Hamilton Karugendo will host the swimming games during the event.
