The Kisii government plans to have Mogonga Mixed Secondary School become an athletics centre of excellence.

Nominated MCA Eric Janganya said the assembly is preparing legislation that will see certain secondary schools rewarded for their stellar performance in various disciplines.

Mogonga has been identified for athletics development following back-to-back success in regional and national sporting events. The school had four students in the Kenyan team that participated in the IAAF World Under-18 Championships held in Nairobi in July last year.

Janganya said centres of excellence for soccer, hockey, rugby, volleyball and netball will also be established with the ultimate aim of reviving athletics in the region.

“We are currently drafting a bill and it will be tabled in the assembly as soon as possible. Mogonga has done great, with minimal resources, in identifying and developing talent.”

Five athletes from the school who qualified to represent the country in the East Africa Secondary Schools Championships set for Rwanda in August will each receive Sh20,000 from the ward representative.

During the National Athletics Championships held at the Kigari Teachers Training College, Mogonga won seven gold medals with Mary Moraa running away with four of the medals.
