RUGBY: Homeboyz, Nakuru RFC and KCB triumph

Defending champions Homeboyz, Nakuru RFC and Kenya Cup League champions Kenya Commercial Bank yesterday won their opening matches at the 29th Great Rift 10-aside contest at Nakuru Athletics Club.

Homeboyz thrashed Western Bulls 46-0 in Pool A and later ran over Makueni RFC 36-0 to lead with six points to glide into knockout stage with a match at hand against Kabras Sugar.

Nakuru RFC beat Nondescripts 12-0 in their first match in what raised head coach Mitch Ocholla’s quest for glory. “We are taking a match at a time and we are determined to do what is required and expected of us,” Ocholla told Standard Sports.

Nakuru were due to play Impala Saracens and Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad last evening. Impala saw off Blak Blad 12-0 to stand a chance of qualifying to the knockout stages only if they beat Nondescripts.

KCB beat Mean Machine 19-5 in Pool C to give tactician Curtis Olago a head start for second title after winning Kenya Cup League title.

The bankers booked their ticket to the quarterfinals after they dismissed Masinde Muliro University of Science Technology 26-5 in a one-sided encounter.

Kenya Harlequins walloped Masinde Muliro University of Science Technology 10-5 while Strathmore Leo’s lost their opening match in Pool B to Nationwide League leaders Menengai Oilers who drubbed them 10-5.

Strathmore made a comeback to win their second match against Kisii RFC whom they beat 5-0 as Mwamba dismissed Kisii RFC 38-5.

Menengai Oilers won their second match against Mwamba 26-5 to sail through to the quarterfinals. [Ben Ahenda]
