KCB open Mathare United account: National Super League side shock Slum Boys in pre-season tie

KPL side forced to finish second in Kariobangi Sharks tournament.

National Super League side Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) upset Mathare United in the last match of the Kariobangi Sharks pre-season tournament at Utalii grounds yesterday.

The loss confined Mathare United to second place in the tournament that brought together six teams.

KCB who narrowly missed qualifying for the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) last season, scored the lone goal through Rodgers Omondi in the 25th minute.

Mathare United finished the match with nine men after Johnstone Omurwe and Wycliffe Kasaya were sent off in the second half while the bankers had Simon Abuko sent off.

Mathare United had come from a goal down to edge out Bandari 2-1 on Friday.

The Dockers had gone ahead through David Kingatua’s strike in the fifth minute.

Ahmed Ahmed equalised in the 18th minute after a period of dominance by Mathare United.

That goal inspired Mathare United further and they went ahead in the 40th minute through Cliff Nyakeya.

Francis Omondi and Wycliffe Ochomo were sent off in the second half for an off the ball incident.

Bandari recovered to beat Kariobangi Sharks 3-2 in another match also played on Friday.

The Dockers opened the scoring through Kingatua who converted from the penalty spot.

Geoffrey Shiveka managed levelled the scores shortly after the break, but Bandari would add to their goal tally through Abdalla Hassan and Wilberforce Lugogo.

Ovella Ochieng’s goal for Sharks only served  to reduce Shark’s losing margin.

Sharks then played to a goalless draw against Mathare United in their last match.

Meanwhile, Ajax Cape Town and Free State Stars played to a goalless stalemate in an Absa Premiership encounter at Cape Town Stadium on Friday evening, adds Agency reports.

The result leaves the hosts in 15th spot on the log standings and firmly in the relegation zone with games running out quickly.

Ea La Koto remain in fourth spot, five points off log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Urban Warriors registered the first shot in anger on a blustery evening as Tercious Malepe let fly from range, but Ali Sangare was up to the task to deny the midfielder with 12 minutes on the clock.

Yannick Zakri, on debut, was next to go close for the hosts who made a positive start, and having beaten the Ea Lla Koto shot-stopper the Ivorian was only denied by Rooi Mahamutsa on the line.
