A pending bills verification committee is poring over documents to establish how a Sh1.3 billion debt was incurred by the former regime.

This comes as Governor Kiraitu Murungi faces the task of paying bills running into millions of shillings incurred under his predecessor, Peter Munya.

Deputy governor Titus Ntuchiu said the committee was examining each bill and the work done by the contractors before approving any payments.

“We have over Sh1.3 billion in outstanding debts inherited from the former regime. A committee is looking into all the pending bills to ascertain their authenticity. We will look into each bill, and establish proof of the work done before releasing any payments for materials or services provided,” said Mr Ntuchiu.

The finance boss was categorical that no money would be paid before the committee is satisfied contractors who are owed met all the terms of their contracts.

“We want to see where the projects are and the scope of work done," he said.
