5,000 miss doses over nurses’ strike

More than 5,000 children in Kisumu County may have missed their vaccinations since the nurses' strike began, exposing them to preventable diseases.

Dickson Onyango, the director of health in Kisumu, said immunisation programmes in public hospitals have been paralysed and the county government was seeking help from non-governmental institutions to bridge the gap.

He said it had partnered with private health facilities to administer the immunisation.

“We have distributed drugs that were stocked in public hospitals to private facilities across the county to offer free immunisation to children,” said Onyango.

He added that many children below five years may have not been immunised against tuberculosis, polio, and measles following the protracted nurses' strike. “We have launched a public outreach to urge mothers to take their children to designated private facilities to get the service.”

Onyango said the county government is keen to prevent childhood illnesses that previously resulted in millions of deaths and disability globally.
