The main suspect in the Moi Girls School Nairobi fire was Thursday taken to Mathari Hospital for mental evaluation.

The student, who has been placed in police custody for seven days to allow police to conduct investigations, appeared at the Milimani Juvenile Court on Wednesday on suspicion that she was behind the fire that killed nine students.

Detectives say they are also keen to establish the girl's upbringing from her parents. Police say initial reports from the school indicate that the parents had been summoned on several occasions to discuss challenges she was facing.
