Golf: Mombasa golfer sinks rare birdie for victory over the weekend

Oyaro, the man to beat in Nyali as Okello and Shah triumph at Muthaiga and Thika tournaments

Mombasa golfer Yobesh Oyaro sank a rare birdie at the back nine to win the 2017 Casino golf tournament at the par 71 Nyali Golf and Country Club course over the weekend.

Playing off handicap 14, Oyaro, a senior member of the club, posted 70 nett to win the overall title in the one-day 18-hole event that attracted 98 golfers.

The golfer sunk the single birdie at the shortest par three-eighth hole and added seven pars to claim victory despite playing mixed bogey shots in the rest holes.

“In fact, I never expected to get this shot. It’s really great and this celebrations will go on for many weeks,” said Oyaro.

Club mate handicap 23 Anthony Getambu was the runner-up, while handicap 24 Duncan Ndegwa, also of Nyali Club, had 73 nett in third spot.

At the par 71 Muthaiga course, handicap 25 Joe Okello beat 200 golfers after posting 44 points to win the overall title of the 2017 Britam tournament on Saturday.

Handicap 10 Denis Mwirigi (39 points), was the men winner. Muthaiga’s Rita Njeru, playing off handicap 18, was the Lady winner on 35 points, while club mate handicap 8, Nancy Ndung’u on 34 points, was the runner-up.

Handicap 11 Kibugu Njoroge on 36 points won the Junior prize. Handicap 13 Don Maina was the senior winner on 34 points.

Limuru’s handicap 23 O. Gachuno won the Guest prize on 36 points, while Muthaiga's handicap 1 John Gitonga, who had 73 gross, was the Gross winner. Handicap 23, Ken Kaniu on 39 points, won the Staff prize.

At Thika Sports Club, Handicap 13 Jitain Shah posted 42 points to win the overall title of the 2017 UAP Insurance tournament on Saturday. Handicap 18 Boniface Karimi had 40 points to win men's title, while Lynda Kinya won  women's title.
