Cotu Secretary General Francis Atwoli has warned that cartels protected by government operatives are taking the economy hostage.

He called on President Uhuru Kenyatta to "take charge" by cracking the whip on corruption. He further urged the President to "take every necessary measure to protect the country from cartels in the oil industry and the agriculture sector making it difficult for ordinary Kenyans to cope with the rising cost of living."

The workers union boss said corruption and cartels in government was to blame for the soaring food prices and high cost of living.

He was speaking during a meeting of floriculture stewards at the Tom Mboya Labour College in Kisumu on Saturday.
