The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights wants hate mongers punished and political inciters barred from contesting in elections.

Commissioner Shatikha Chivusia warned that irresponsible political speeches would destabilise the country and asked relevant institutions tasked with ensuring cohesion and security to take action against perpetrators of violence.

Speaking in Kitale, Ms Chivusia asked leaders and aspirants to preach peace and harmony, arguing that the skirmishes witnessed in Baringo and Laikipia were not good for the country.

"It is like Kenyans are at war with each other... Let political leaders refrain from inciting communities to fight one another," she said.

She emphasised the need for aspirants to follow election procedures and regulations outlined in the Constitution to enhance democratic elections.

"The manner of conducting campaigns and elections is provided for in the law and must be followed. Otherwise those abusing the provisions should face the law and be barred from contesting," said the commissioner.

She urged Kenyans to exercise their constitutional rights by electing leaders with credible records.

Chivusia's sentiments were echoed by Trans Nzoia governor aspirant Andrew Wanyonyi and the ODM aspirant for the Saboti parliamentary seat, Caleb Amisi.

The National Liberal Party also wants politicians who engage in violence banned from taking party in elective politics.

The party, in a statement issued by Director of Elections Justus Rasugu, condemned the skirmishes witnessed in Migori County on Monday.
