The Nyong'ong'a Secondary School principal has denied reports that one of his students committed suicide because she was ridiculed by a teacher.

The headteacher said the 16-year-old girl sneaked out of school on March 22. "We realised the student was not in school at 4pm when her mother came to look for her," he said.

Her body was found the following day in a drainage of the Sondu Miriu hydro-power station.

Police said they were investigating the girl's death.
