Mourinho would prefer to win the Europa League than finish in the top four

Jose Mourinho has revealed he would rather Manchester United win the Europa League than finish fourth in the Premier League.

Both outcomes would guarantee the Red Devils a place in next season's Champions League, but the Portuguese believes one has much better benefits.

United's 3-1 away win over Middlesbrough saw them move up the table to fifth on Sunday - closing the gap on top four rivals Liverpool and Manchester City.

However, speaking after the victory, Mourinho said he would rather access next season's major European competition via the Europa League, anyway.

"Would I prefer to finish fourth or win the Europa League?" said Mourinho. "I prefer to win the Europa League.

"The Europa League give us the same - Champions League football - but also gives us a trophy, gives us prestige and gives us a European Super Cup."
