Tarmacking of the 30km Lurambi-Navakholo-Musikoma road has finally started.

The road has been in a pathetic condition since independence and politicians have been using it as a campaign tool over the years.

President Uhuru Kenyatta launched the construction of the road last year during his tour of western Kenya.

The road links Kakamega and Bungoma counties.

"Since independence all regimes have ignored the road but the suffering of our people has to come to an end. The construction of the road has started and we expect the contractor to complete it on time," Navakholo MP Emmanuel Wangwe said.

The legislator said the Government had released Sh300 million to start off the project which will cost Sh2 billion.

"Construction of the road was delayed due to a court case which cancelled the initial contract forcing the process to start afresh. The tender has been awarded, the contractor is on the site and we expect construction to be complete within the set timelines," he said.

He lauded Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya for supporting the project.

"The governor was and is still supportive of the project. The road will boost the economy of the region," Wangwe said.

The Government is also tarmacking three roads to ease movement of people and farm produce.

The roads include Sigalagala-Sidindi road and Ibokolo-Shianda-Malaha road.

Mumias East MP Benjamin Washiali confirmed that the contractor will have tarmacked three kilometres by end of April.

"Work is in progress and by end of April at least three kilometers will have been completed," Washiali said.

During his first visit in the county after elections, Uhuru promised to tarmac the roads before his first term ends.

Besides tarmacking the roads, the Government has released equipment from the National Youth Service for road maintenance.
