It was a prank, says Meru man on juju remark

A man who claimed he could use charms to protect Meru Senator Kiraitu Murungi's bid has had to eat humble pie.

James Mugambi Barongo alias Kaana ka Njoka said he was a Christian and a comedian who entertains people during political rallies.

He accused Tigania East MP Mpuru Aburi of hoodwinking him into a prank that backfired.

The man from Ngongo-Aka village in Tigania East said he was an elder at a local Pentecostal Evangelical Fellowship of Africa (PEFA) church.

He has previously been a pastor at the Nazarene Church for seven years and an evangelist with the East African Pentecostal Church for a similar period.

Mugambi amazed a South Imenti leaders' meeting at the weekend in Kiigene when he claimed he was a powerful witchdoctor who could cast a spell on those against Murungi's gubernatorial bid.

He apologised to the Meru people in a bid to save the badly hurt gubernatorial campaign of the area senator.

Kiraitu has since distanced himself from juju tactics, saying he is a staunch Christian who believes in the values and teachings of the Bible.

Yesterday Aburi, who sources in Meru said was being sought by the local PEFA leadership to explain how he ended up connecting their member with black magic, told the media it was all part of a comedy, which Barongo supposedly performs to entertain political meetings in Meru.
