First glance spectators thought Reading captain George Evans turned down Wayne Rooney’s offer of swapping shirts.

But Evans – who is a former Manchester City academy graduate – has taken to twitter to defuse the situation which erupted after the Red Devils’ comfortable 4-0 win in the FA Cup third round.

The pair crossed paths in the centre circle once referee Andre Marriner blew the final whistle before they shook hands and exchanged words.

But as Rooney walked off he went to take off his shirt to swap with Evans but the Reading captain dismissed the gesture immediately.

Rooney walked off looking puzzled after his opponent rejected his gesture in front of the cameras.

Fans instantly thought the former City youngster had rejected the United ace.

But it turns out the defender wanted to swap shirts in the tunnel at Old Trafford rather than in front of the travelling Reading fans.
