Varsity students demand arrest of man who killed ex-girlfriend

Maasai Mara University students have demanded the immediate arrest of a suspect who killed a 22-year-old Third Year student.

The incident that is believed to have happened on Thursday night sparked outrage among students who have given police two days ultimatum to apprehend the suspect.

The students through their Student Union Secretary General Kinzi Keiza called for quick investigation into the incident, saying the suspect who is believed to be a student at Moi University Annex campus is known.

"We need justice for our fallen comrade. We are, therefore, giving the police until Monday (today) to produce the suspect to face the law failure to which we will hold demonstrations," said Keiza.

Neighbours told The Standard that they suspected something was wrong when the loud music kept on in the house while the door was locked from outside. They alerted police who broke into the house and found the body of Emily Jelimo Ng'etich.

Ms Jelimo, who was pursuing a degree in Applied Statistics and Computing, was described by her close friends as a humble and friendly girl. Her next of kin were informed immediately by the acting Dean of Students Ambrose Koech who was accompanied by some students who knew her home in Uasin Gishu.

Some students claimed Jelimo had informed them that his ex-boyfriend was coming over.

They claimed that on Thursday, the said boyfriend who wanted to get back together with her allegedly came and had time together only for her body to be recovered the following day.

Area OCPD Paul Kiogora said they were investigating the incident and called on locals to volunteer information that might assist the police get to the bottom of the matter.

"At around 5pm, Friday the public reported to the police that there could be somebody who had been murdered in the house. Our officers responded and they broke into the window where they found the body of the girl," said Mr Kiogora.

He said that they suspected foul play in the incident as the door was locked with a padlock from outside and the body was half-naked.

"There is high probability that the girl was killed by strangulation or otherwise as her body had no physical injuries," said Kiogora.
