Members of County Assembly who will not be re-elected in 2017 plot for send-off package

Members of the County Assembly now want a send-off package to be awarded to those who will not be re-elected in 2017.

The assembly, through the House Powers and Privileges Committee, plans to come up with a bill seeking to award members hefty send-off packages for fear that some of them may not be back in the House either as elected or nominated MCAs.

The 12-member committee presented the report after a benchmarking visit to the National Assembly from November 16 to 20, last year, where they were to understand the application of immunity for members of the assembly as it applies to their official functions in the House.

The proposal was supported by a majority of MCAs.

Nyakach Central Ward Representative Elijah Omondi said “we would not wish to leave empty handed at the end of the five years of our service to the people.”

Kisumu Speaker Anne Adul said MCAs should hasten the process before the end of the financial year.

The County Assembly of Kisumu is not the first to start preparing for their send-off package since Vihiga MCAs started theirs last year.

In Vihiga, each of the 39 MCAs and speaker Dan Chitwah would go home with at least Sh1.2 million.

The motion, which was overwhelmingly supported by all the MCAs, was tabled by Muhudu MCA Jackson Musoga.
