Students still turning up for holiday tuition

The Ministry of Education, after a thorough research, banned holiday tuition in all primary and secondary schools.

However, the ban is being defied in most areas countrywide.

In Baringo County, there are more private tuition centres than public schools.

In Eldama Ravine, for example, private proprietors have organised business-like tuition now termed as holiday coaching. And this is even happening near the constituency’s Ministry of Education office.

The irony is that while all public schools seem to have conformed to the ministry’s directive, the students turning up for holiday coaching are mostly from the same public schools.

Every Kenyan is alive to the cultural fact that December is not only a festive season but also a cultural season. Therefore engaging students in academics denies them the right to both fairness and cultural participation.

The Government should stem this kind of holiday coaching.

This kind of unfair access to learning compels the less fortunate to try catching up by cheating in their final exams.
