Missing University of Eldoret student leader found

Eldoret, Kenya: A student leader at the University of Eldoret who went missing last Wednesday during protests at the institution has been found.

Wesley Kogo, the secretary general of the students' governing council was found by the roadside in Burnt Forest area where it is said he had been left by his kidnappers at around 2.00AM.

Musa Kenei, father to Kogo said he was called by a woman at wee hours of the night asking him if he knew Wesley.

"I told her I had been looking for him since last week when he went missing and she told me he had crawled to her doorstep and asked her to contact me urgently as he seemed unwell," explained Kenei.

According to Kenei, he coordinated with relatives and with the help of the woman, they found his son before they contacted the local administration and took him to hospital where he is recuperating.

"It is great that we have found him alive, though he seems not to comprehend well the events that led to his disappearance, all his belongings were taken away by the abductors," he said.

Kenei told the press at Eldoret Hospital that his son narrated how he was bundled into a vehicle by a woman who had pretended to be sick and needed to be helped out of the car, but instead pulled him into the vehicle where he was blindfolded and taken to an unknown destination.

"He told me he was muzzled and he could not raise alarm besides he did not know where he was. He says he was asked by the abductors who had coordinated and sponsored the demonstration against the University's vice chancellor," said Kenei.

Kenei added that his son was also questioned where Uasin Gishu senator Isaac Melly had gotten the hard copies of the University staff's information.

A nurse who was attending to Kogo said they had conducted all necessary tests when he was brought in at 10.00 am and did not find any problem apart from minor physical injuries and fatigue, saying he needed time to regain energy before he could be discharged.

Local leaders including senator Melly and Members of County Assembly thronged the hospital and called on the security agents to investigate and bring to book those who had kidnapped Kogo.

His father also raised concern with the security of his son at the University and called on the institution's management to establish a way of ensuring security of all students in the institution.
