Al Shabaab militants claim responsibility in death of 36 people in Mandera

MANDERA COUNTY: At least 36 quarry workers were Tuesday killed by suspected Al-Shabaab militants in an attack in Koromei area, Mandera County.

The workers were ambushed by gunmen at the site as they slept. The attackers are believed to be  AL Shabaab militants  who opened fire shooting indiscriminately.

Others were decapitated by the attackers. Initial reports say the attackers kidnapped some of the workers. All the victims are non-Muslims.

Those who were Muslims were separated from Christians before the attack was meted out.

Police confirmed the deaths and added they were yet to know the motive. The attack came hours after another group launched an attack on a club in Wajir that left one person dead and 13 wounded.

Police boss David Kimaiyo confirmed the attack and said the attackers escaped.

“We have the reports of quarry workers being killed but we will give you more and detailed information,” he said.
