Students demand probe into death of two university students shot by police officers

Nakuru, Kenya: Egerton University students have called on Independent Oversight Authority (IPOA) and Amnesty International to conduct investigation into the killings of two students by police officers.

Speaking to The Standard, students’ union chairman Isaac Ongoma said police officers have not given them clear information on what led to the fatal shootings.

"The killing of the second year students is not clear that is why an independent body should conduct further investigation for justice to take its course," said Ongoma.

According to Central Police Station boss Paul Wanjama, the two, Phelix Magomere, a second year biochemistry student, and Dennis Nyangina, a general science student, were shot on suspicion of being muggers on November 7.

Ongoma said the two left Egerton main campus in Njoro for Nairobi on November 7 in company of a business man but they did not return.

He added that friends and relatives carried out an intensive search for the missing two before they were found at Nairobi City mortuary.

"The two left the school after the week's lessons only to be reported dead. Students are worried about their security and want the government to provide information on cause of their death," said Ongoma.

David Makenzi, Magomere's father said he will be seeking justice following the killings of the two through unclear circumstances.

Makenzi maintains that his son had travelled to Higher Education Loans Board offices in Nairobi to secure a loan before the brutal killings.

He said he recorded a missing statement at Nairobi central police, Kasarani, Starehe and Kamukunji after two weeks of search.

On November 21, he said he went back to the station where he was told by an officer that the two had been shot dead at Global Roundabout area after indulging in mugging.

"An officer at central police said Nyangena had been shot while my son was knocked down by a police vehicle while escaping the scene of crime," alleged Makenzi.

The bodies have been transferred to Umash funeral mortuary as the families commence burial arrangement to be held in Kitale and Kisii.
