NICKNAMES: Why Brazilians use single names?

It is just simple. Brazil was colonised by Portugal. They therefore inherited the Portuguese tradition of using four names. The naming system is found in Portugal’s colonies such as Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Sao Tome and Principe and Guinea Bissau. To solve the problem for children nicknames are coined from the many names. Famous among them is Edson Arantes do Nascimento or simply Pele, Oscar dos Santos Emboaba Júnior (Oscar), Marcelo Vieira da Silva Júnior (Marcelo), Fernando Luiz Roza (Fernandinho), Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior (Neymar Jr) and many others.
