Hattie McDaniel was the first black person and woman to win an Academy Award. At the Oscars, usually about 90 per cent of the voters are white and 64 per cent are male. I feel so proud to see the world celebrate the success that has earned Lupita Nyong’o her place in history in all realms. And just like President Uhuru Kenyatta put it, indeed, “You are the pride of Africa.”
Her role in 12 years a slave was undeniably emotional and provoked anger in many who have studied black history or the colonisation path in Africa and all countries where black slavery existed. Lupita’s acceptance speech was most moving, “It doesn’t escape me that for one moment that so much joy in my life is thanks to so much pain someone else’s.”
