Cotu pushes for probe into Tassia project

NAIROBI, KENYA: The Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Cotu) is pushing for investigations into the Tassia infrastructure scam. It says this project should be included into the clean-up job planned by Labour Cabinet Secretary Kazungu Kambi.

This position taken by Cotu comes as a fierce round of finger pointing erupts among key trustees sitting at the State-owned National Social Security Fund (NSSF).  Kambi is pushing for prosecution of certain trustees, past and present, sitting on the NSSF board. Under sharp scrutiny is Cotu and Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE) accused of sitting on the fence, while financial atrocities were committed at NSSF. In reaction to a story appearing in the Standard business yesterday, Cotu insists that it has always raised objections to any fraudulent transactions taking place at the fund.

“We were the first to object to the way workers funds were fraudulently invested into the Euro Bank.  On Discount Securities, those who were involved are now in court and Kibaki’s government directed to stop the exorbitant purchase of forest land and purchase of uneconomical quarries,” said Francis Atwoli in a statement. The union takes credit for all cases before the court, insisting that it has been vigilant in securing NSSF money against speculators and fraud cartels
