Nyandarua, Kenya: Nyandarua County Governor Daniel Mwangi Tuesday said his government was committed to improving the lives of residents through agriculture and tourism.

Mr Mwangi said the county had fertile soils and adequate water, which if well utilised, will improve agriculture and create employment for majority of youths.

“Nyandarua County has potential in agriculture that can absorb majority of youths seeking employment that will improve livelihoods and reduce criminal activities,” said Mwangi.

He said the county had plans of boosting production of potatoes, milk and carrots, which do well in the region.

The governor was speaking in his office Tuesday when senior Standard Group managers paid him a courtesy call.  The managers included Director of Business Development and Innovations Francis Munywoki, Commercial Director Irene Kimani, Commercial Manager Grace Kabbis and The Counties Managing Editor Kipkoech Tanui.

Mwangi also revealed the county had plans of reviving the pyrethrum industry by encouraging more farmers to plant the cash crop.

“Majority of farms that used to grow pyrethrum are lying idle while farmers face financial constraints. The county government is committed to reviving the cash crop,” he said.

Further, the governor revealed that the county will improve the road network to ensure that farm produce reach markets and industries on time.

Tourist sites

Mwangi said if well exploited, tourist sites in the county including the hippopotamus inhabited Lake Olobolosat have the potential to earn the county income from both local and foreign tourists.

“Nyandarua has tourist attraction sites that my government is going to explore to increase the number of tourists to earn income for implementing proposed projects,” said the governor.

On his part, Deputy Governor Waithaka Mwangi said leaders in the county were committed to ensuring that devolution operated smoothly for the benefit of all residents.

He said devolution would steer the development agenda of the country as it brings leadership and development projects closer to citizens.
