Reggae artiste: Alaine Laughton

My style is…

Strutting in fitting clothes that bring out my sex appeal but nothing too revealing. I try to be myself and I feel way better in sexy outfits.

Most reggae artistes tend to embrace particular rugged look, why is yours different?

The reggae image is a bit too rough for my songs and my individual style. I like being a lady and a diva and that is why I prefer my style.

How do you incorporate the Rastafarian colours into your style?

I wear the Rasta hats and sometimes the belts as well as a bit of jewellery.

Your current fashion craze?

Reggae artiste: Alaine Laughton

It’s the minx nails. It is the fashion right now in the United States. The nail polish has given way to stick-on colours. One can easily get different colours. They are quite funky and do not chip.

What did you spend more money on in the past month?

Shoes. I am a shoe-holic but I shop within reason, I do not go overboard when shopping.

I cannot stop wearing…

Heels. I really love the way I look in them but I always have a pair of sandals in my bag in case I have to walk around.

Having travelled widely, which country would you implement its street fashion?

Japan. The Japanese are on a different fashion radar, I would really like to do punk coloured hair for a couple of weeks.

Accessories to me …

Are great essentials to my wardrobe. They show off my personality and make my look more elaborate.

I like make-up as…

It gives me different faces and brings out the kind of mood I’m in at the time. I do not wear a lot of make-up unless I have a show. On a normal day, a little mascara, eyeliner and lip-gloss are just enough for the day.

What fashion souvenir are you carrying from Kenya?

I love the Maasai beads. I really love African art and fashion so I will carry as much accessories as I possibly can.

How would you describe the Jamaican fashion?

There is so much influence from Europe. The dancehall movement is about the overly sexy dressing. The rough look you see in the videos is not the only way of dressing, though it is common. There are people who also embrace the punk styles away from reggae.

I cut my hair short because…

I was tired of long hair, and I wanted to get a different image, my mother is my personal hairdresser so she sees to it that my hair brings out the impression I want to achieve.
