KENYA: The Supreme Court has summoned Law Society of Kenya (LSK) chairman Erick Mutua next Thursday over comments he made on the petition challenging election of President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The Supreme Court issued the summons last Monday. “You are hereby summoned to appear before the Supreme Court on August 1 at 9am,” said the letter signed by Lucy Njora, deputy registrar of Supreme Court.

Subsequently, LSK issued a statement signed by its secretary Apollo Mboya saying the society had appointed senior counsel Tom Ojienda to lead the legal team representing the chairman in court.

The president of the Supreme Court Chief Justice Willy Mutunga had informed Mutua in April after the comments were published in a local daily that he had contravened an order issued by court, warning against commenting on ongoing petitions challenging the election of Uhuru as president.

Justice Mutunga said the article attributed to Mutua touched on issues before the court and ordered him to appear in court on a date to be notified to him.
