Jerono stuns rivals at Technical Institute event

Mercyline Jerono of Mawego clocked 4:53.1 to win 1,500m race during Kenya Technical Training Institutes Sports Organisation (Kettiso) Athletics Championships at NairobI West Prisons.

Ezna Onkeo of Keroka was placed second in 4:56.1 followed by team mate Carol Nyagawa in 4:58.0.

Jerono who opted to lead from the front said the Prisons track favoured her pre-race strategy.

“My plan was to lead from the front and maintain the position to finish line,” said Jerono. “The race was tough and I want to congratulate my opponents for pressuring me to run first.”

Jilani Stephen of Mombasa clocked 11.3 seconds to win men’s 100m race followed by Elikanah Kipkemboi of Olesson in 11.4 and David Wamira of Karen timed at  11.5 seconds.

David Wamira of Karen finished in fourth position clocking 11.8 while  Boaz Avaka of Keroka crossed the line in 11.8.

Triple jump for women was hotly contested with Leah Walumoli emerging the winner after jumping 9.51 metres. Vernice Ogot with a jump of 9.25 and Joan Jepkoech (9.15) came second and  third.

Keroka were overall winners in women’s category after they gannered  four gold, four silver and seven bronze.

Amos Lagat of Rift Valley Technocal Training Institute (RVTTI) won 3,000m race while Fredrick Muranga claimed 10,000m title.

Rift Valley Technical Training Institute (RVTTI) were runners-up with three gold and same number of silver while Mawego came third with two gold, four silver and a bronze.

Eglay Nalianya of RVTTI was declared the best female athlete in the Championships. Keroka also ruled supremacy in men’s category after they topped the medal log with three gold, four silver and two bronze.

RVTTI followed in the second position with three gold, a silver and three bronze, while Mawego occupied third overall  position with three gold four silver, and three bronze.

Edwin Tarno, the Kenya Association of Training Institutes chairman Edwin Tarno were among the guest at the occasion.
