Police PR tactic failed

After the Monday riots, which saw three people dead and several others injured in Nyanza region, the Kenya Police Service decided to airlift some officers they claimed were injured during the protests for specialised treatment at Nairobi West Hospital.

Twenty-nine police officers, interestingly all Administration Police, were airlifted to Nairobi with fractures that were similar – all on their right hand side.

Question is, were the police treated in any hospital within Nyanza region before they were referred for special treatment in Nairobi West Hospital?

Is Nairobi West Hospital better than Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, Avenue, AAR, Aga Khan, St Luke, Masaba in Maseno or even Coptic also in Maseno? Does this simply mean that, in Nyanza, we have no better hospitals?

Even a fool who witnessed the public relations that the officers tried to employ would say their tactic failed miserably.

At the Kisumu Airport, an officer who claimed to be injured and was limping, was helped to climb the aircraft, forgot after he landed at the Wilson Airport that he was helped and was limping and brought himself down to be received by the contingent of the big guys that received them in Nairobi, including Interior PS Karanja Kibichu.

What shocked most is that, after alighting from the aircraft, the initially limping officer who was helped board the aircraft, walked well and even walked back to pick his bag from the aircraft.

Which brings me to the other question, was the particular police just doing the limping in Kisumu for cameras to see or was he in dire need to board that plane? Why is it that when Kenyans are killed, for example in Garisa College, we are told the aircraft can only carry four officers, but was able to carry 10 injured officers?

The said injured officers had bandages on their foreheads and hands. Who treated them and referred them to Nairobi? In which hospital were they treated before it was decided that they required special treatment outside Nyanza region?

The police can do better. On this, the public relations failed.
