Lung cancer has the highest incidence among known forms of cancer, with 1.3 million cases reported annually. The mortality rates are high but like any other form of cancer, lung cancer can be treated if diagnosed early.
According to a recent meta-analysis study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, feeding on vegetables and fruits significantly reduces lung cancer incidences, and especially among females.
This is critical information coming at a time when the international agency on cancer research reported that processed meat increases chances of developing cancer.
Vegetables and fruits have antioxidants that scavenge and destroy chemicals called oxidants that are carcinogenic. They reduce the process involved in DNA structural change associated with cancer risks.
Thirdly, fruits and vegetables improve DNA repair processes potentially inhibiting cancer development.
It is however important to note cigarette smoking remains a major risk factor in development of lung cancer. Pollution is a risk factor and government should come up with laws that charge heavy penalties for those found polluting air.
Finally, engaging in physical activities is associated with reduced incidence of lung cancer and all cancers in general. Research in cancer immunology should be enhanced in our universities and research institutes in a bid to improve cancer awareness.
