Wangige parents protest alleged grabbing of school land

Parents and pupils at Wangige Primary School yesterday took to the streets to protest alleged grabbing of the school land by the county government.

The piece of land borders the school and was earmarked for the construction of Wangige Secondary School in the near future.

In a statement read on their behalf by Rev Peter Kibiku of ACK Ndunyu before it was presented to Kabete Sub-county Administrator Patrick Muroi, the parents said they bought the land from the late Kinuthia Muigai in 1938.

The parents are now demanding revocation of the Kenya Gazette notice number KBU/43/14/2009 of July 28, 2014.

They also want the Lands ministry to issue title deeds to all parcels of land belonging to the school so that they can develop them as planned.

Land trustees

Kibiku said the school has been demanding for a title deed since 1970, in vain.

Area MP Ferdinand Waititu, who joined the protest, said his Constituency's Development Fund had already allocated Sh5 million for the construction of the secondary school.

But Mr Muroi said the county government was the bona fide owner of the said land and planned to build a sub-county office there.

Muroi said the construction of the Kabete sub-county offices will go on since the county government is the trustee of all parcels of land in the county.

"If they want to build a school we will allocate them another place since we are the trustees of land," said Muroi.
