Boy swims to his death in a river

A fifteen-year-old boy from Tolmo, Eldama Ravine sub-county, drowned while swimming at River Perkerra on Monday afternoon.

The boy is said to have gone to graze their goats when he met his friends and went swimming.

"The boy, an often swimmer at the river is said to have gone taking care of goats along the river when his friends persuaded him to accompany them to swimming," Koibatek deputy police boss Jonathan Wafula said.

He added that while swimming, the boy went to the deeper end of the river where he drowned.

Mr Wafula said efforts by his friends to save him did not bear fruits because of the increased volumes of water that even scared residents from diving to his rescue.

"Cries of the friends attracted the public but they had no rescue equipment to use in the river whose volume had increased. He unfortunately died," he added.

He said police officers combined efforts with members of the public and removed the body and took it to Eldama Ravine sub-county mortuary for postmortem.

The administrator cautioned residents to be careful and take extra measures while walking near water bodies to avoid anticipated deaths.

He said volumes in most rivers in the area had increased following the ongoing heavy rains pounding the region.
