Nairobi man jumps out of matatu to save woman from muggers, gets shot

NAIROBI: A man was shot and seriously wounded as he tried to rescue a woman being mugged along Ngong Road, Nairobi.

The man had jumped out of a moving matatu to rescue the woman who was being mugged by three men at about 9 pm on Monday when he was shot in the stomach.

Police say a matatu driver was headed for the CBD from Ngong Town when he witnessed the incident on the roadside.  The woman according to police had been pinned down and was being robbed of her valuables.

The driver according to Kilimani OCPD Peter Katam stopped the matatu before one of the passengers jumped out to rescue the victim.

"He did not know the attackers were armed and as he fought them, one of the men shot him at close range flooring him before they escaped on foot with some valuables they had robbed the woman," said Katam.

The gang is said to have escaped towards Kibera slums as the others passengers ran to the rescue of the injured man.

Katam said the man was rushed to the nearby Nairobi Women Hospital where he is admitted in stable condition.

He added a hunt on the gunmen who escaped is ongoing.

Elsewhere, a suspected thug was Monday night shot dead in a robbery incident in Huruma area, Nairobi.

The deceased was in a group of four and were attacking and mugging locals when an alarm was raised. Police say they responded there and killed one suspect before the others accomplices managed to escape on foot.

No arrest has been made so far and efforts to trace the other accomplices are ongoing, said Starehe OCPD Bernard Nyakwaka.

And police are investigating an incident in which a university student was found dead in a hostel in Nairobi. The body was later moved to the mortuary as investigations into the incident go on.
