Motorists stranded in Kainuk after residents block Kitale-Lodwar Highway over insecurity

Turkana, Kenya: Residents of Kainuk, Turkana South Sub County have blocked the Kitale-Lodwar road after a raid on Jamhuri day that left three dead, two injured and 4340 goats and sheep stolen.

According to Kainuk Ward Administrator David Ekurudi, the angry residents decided to block the roads on Friday night after sequential raids in the region.

“The people are angry that the government is doing nothing to stop the raids yet many have been widowed and others orphaned. They have vowed not to remove the tree stumps that have been used to block the road until the government responds,” said Ekurudi.

Ekurudi added that many vehicles including those of Tullow Oil have been grounded thus paralyzing their operations in the county.

According a resident Peter Eruman, the residents have vowed not to open the road until President Uhuru Kenyatta tackles the insecurity problem in the region.

“We will not open the road until President Uhuru Kenyatta flies in to sort the situation once and for all.  We have lost too many people and we are not ready to lose others,” said Eruman.

Kitale-Lodwar highway is the only road that connects Lodwar, Lokichar and other urban centres.
