Governors Joshua Irungu, Nderitu Gachagua condemn killings

Two governors from Central Kenya have condemned the Monday night massacre of 36 quarry miners in Mandera County, as they called for stringent measures to secure the lives of Kenyans.

Governors Joshua Irungu (Laikipia) and Nderitu Gachagua (Nyeri) said the killing of Kenyans was horrifying, as they called on Kenyans to unite and uphold the Nyumba Kumi initiative.

Mr Irungu regretted that Al Shabaab insurgents intended to divide Kenyans along religious lines, noting that it was clear that Christians are now targets of the terrorist gang.

"It is damning to hear that barely a week after 28 other people were killed, 36 others have been shot dead," said Irungu.

Speaking at the county headquarters when he handed over a trophy that the county won for being the best procurement entity in Kenya, Irungu further called for review and reorganisation of the security systems in the country.

And separately, in a statement to media houses, Mr Gachagua termed the massacre at a quarry at Koromei in Mandera County as horrifying.

"It has come so soon after last week's massacre of 28 bus passengers in the same county. I wish to convey my deepest sympathies to all the families who have lost their loved ones from this cowardly and heinous act of terrorism, noting in particular that a majority of the victims reportedly hailed from Nyeri County," he said.

He said he was confident that the country will unite to confront the threat of terrorism in the country.
