'Alcoblow' trap nabs county executive Charles Birech

Seven motorists, among them a county executive committee member, were arrested on the Kericho-Kisumu road for alleged drunk driving over the weekend.

Transport Executive Charles Birech and six others were arrested at the Kisumu junction in the middle of the night and booked at Kericho Police Station after they failed the breathalyser tests.

They were later released on cash bails of between Sh10,000 and Sh30,000 and ordered to appear before a Kericho court today to answer to charges of drunk-driving. Their vehicles were detained at the station.

Kericho Police Commander Rose Muchuma warned motorists using the road to obey traffic rules and to drive within the recommended speed limits lest they found themselves on the wrong side of the law.

"Motorists should not feign ignoranve regarding the law because speed limits are indicated on their vehicles. Whoever exceeds the limit will be detected and charged," Ms Muchuma said.

She added a crackdown on speeding vehicles had, in three days, netted over 28 motorists who have since been arraigned.

Muchuma said the court had collected Sh470,000 from motorists caught speeding.

"The Kisumu-Kericho-Mau Summit road is near completion and motorists now tend to speed," she said.
