Gangsters slash widow to death over land dispute

Taveta, Kenya: A widow was killed and her farmhand critically injured at Timbila Wanga village in what police have linked to a land dispute in the area.

Police yesterday said armed robbers raided a residence at Timbila Wanga village on the outskirts of Taveta town and killed the woman identified as Maria Mangu.

The incident has sparked public outcry and condemnation with residents challenging the police to take action against the killers.

Taveta OCPD Gababa Darso said the gang raided the residence of the deceased at night and slashed her to death. They also critically injured the farmhand.

He said they have recovered three machetes dumped in a valley nearby.

"The farmhand is still fighting for his life at Taveta District hospital. He has deep cuts and is in critical condition," he said.

Darso said investigations into the incident had been launched.
