Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has advertised for the positions of Kenya Sevens team head coach and team manager currently held by Benjamin Ayimba and Newton Ong’alo.

The duo’s contracts will expire this month. The decision to advertise Ayimba and Ong’alo’s positions, who replaced Felix Ochieng’ and Steve Sewe last year in September on a short term contract, was reached on September 9 during the Union Board’s meeting.

Ayimba made history on his re-appointment as the first coach, who led the national Sevens team to Cup victory in the Singapore Sevens IRB Series.

However, his second tenure ended on a bad note after a disappointing outing in Rio Olympics Games, where Kenya finished 11th overall.

According to the KRU’s statement, the head coach applicants should have a minimum of three years of experience as a head coach in a Division One club /Elite Squad.

“The Board of the Union is keen on filling the position of the Head Coach, Kenya Sevens National Team accountable to the Board through the Chief Executive Officer and the Director of Rugby for the effective overall management of the Kenya Sevens Team,” the board wrote.

“The appointed person will coach the team, on and off the field, to a standard of excellence, demonstrating a significant improvement over each annual period of centralization, enhancing the reputation of the Kenya Rugby Union. The Head Coach will report to the National Squads Management Committee through the Director of Rugby.”

Ayimba and On’galo are also free to re-apply for their respective jobs.

Interested individuals were asked to submit their applications to [email protected], no later than September 30, 2016.

Ayimba said he will re-apply for the same post.

“Yes, I did not have a contract. But now that they have advertised for the same, I will apply and see how it goes.”

Meanwhile, the national Sevens Series champions Homeboyz are top seeds for this weekend’s Christie Sevens, the final leg of the Series at the RFUEA Grounds.

The Deejays, who have 104 points from five legs, graced all the finals and won three (Prinsloo, Dala and Nanyuki). They are in Pool A alongside disposed Series champions Nakuru, Blak Blad and the invitational team Stormers.

Nanyuki Sevens finalists Kenya Commercial Bank headline Pool B, which has Kabras Sugar, Catholic Monks and invited Uganda’s side Kobs.

Third-placed Impala will battle with Strathmore, Menengai Oilers and Nondescript in Pool C, while Mwamba, Quins, Mean Machine and Daystar Falcons are in Pool D.
