TENNIS: Andy Murray ends British three-year wait for Grand Slam

Andy Murray

Andy Murray declared he is playing the best tennis of his life after ending a three-year wait for his third Grand Slam in sensational style.

But world No.2 Murray , who claimed his second Wimbledon title, then insisted he can get even better.

A lot has happened in the life of the British No 1 since he famously ended the nation’s 77-year wait for a male Wimbledon champion in 2013: back surgery, marriage, the birth of his first child and the loss of three more Grand Slam finals to Novak Djokovic.

On Sunday, in his last Wimbledon before he turns 30, the Olympic and Davis Cup champion started another cycle of success .

Since French Open final defeat a month ago, Ivan Lendl has returned as his head coach to add momentum to his great form this summer which has now seen him win three out of five tournaments – and lose the title decider in the other two.

Against the cannon-ball serve Milos Raonic on Sunday, the Scot returned with breathtaking skill and picked him off with a dizzying array of dipping and passing shots to win 6-4 7-6 7-6 in two hours and 47 minutes.

It was a the performance of a player at the peak of his powers.

“I think the last three months really, since probably Monte Carlo, have been some of the best I’ve played in terms of consistency,” said the Scot.
