Jose Mourinho 'close' to Manchester United deal to replace Louis van Gaal

Jose Mourinho makes a gesture

Jose Mourinho has reportedly agreed a deal to replace Louis van Gaal at Manchester United.

The former Chelsea boss is the favourite to take over at Old Trafford with Van Gaal remaining under pressure.

It was claimed earlier this week that Ed Woodward had already decided to replace the Dutchman in the summer, with Mourinho seen as an ideal candidate.

And now Sky Italia journalist Alessandro Alciato claims a deal with Mourinho is ‘close', reports the Manchester Evening News.

Van Gaal has another year to run on his contract after this season and it is understood that United would like him to see out his deal.

Much will depend on whether United's form improves between now and the end of the season.

Failure to qualify for the Champions League would put the Dutchman under intense pressure.

Woodward will address United investors next week when he is expected to be quizzed about his manager's future.

The appointment of Pep Guardiola by Manchester City has only added to the scrutiny of Van Gaal and could force Old Trafford's hierarchy to act.
