Ten-time Kenyan Premier League champions Tusker now have no choice but to shift their focus to the KPL Top 8 Cup, after failing to advance to the quarter-finals of the 2015 GOtv Shield at the weekend.

The Brewers suffered a shock 5-4 defeat to giant killers Nzoia United on post-match penalties after a 1-1 draw in regular time at the Moi Stadium, Kisumu, leaving their KPL Top 8 title defence as the only hope of silverware this season.

“We didn’t expect that to happen and everybody was really disappointed with the result. But as you know in football anything can happen,” Tusker winger Danson Kago told Feverpitch.

“We had hopes of winning at least two trophies this season, but we are now looking forward to defending our KPL Top 8 title. It is going to be a do or die because we only have three matches and we retain the title.”

Striker Mark Bikokwa put the Football Kenya Premier League side ahead from the spot on the hour mark after Eugene Asike handled the ball in the area. But with 10 minutes remaining, Clifford Alwanga levelled the score forcing the match into penalties.

Nzoia scored their penalties through Lawrence Juma, Bikokwa, Bonface Mucheri, Valen Mahero and goalkeeper Benson Mangala, with Festus Okine and Patrick Kwitonda missing their spot kicks.

Kevin Kimani, Jockins Atudo, Alwanga and Jesse Were converted the brewers’ penalties with the trio of Brian Osumba, James Situma and Humphrey Mieno squandering their penalties.

The victory comes barely a month after the Bernard Mwalala-trained side stunned last year’s finalist Posta Rangers in a knock out match.

Sony Sugar also qualified for the last sixteen of the oldest tournament in the country after beating a stubborn West Kenya Sugar 2-1 at the same venue.

Edwin Oduor scored on either side of Brian Arasa’s effort to eliminate last year’s semi-finalists from the competition.

In other matches, Farid Mohammed and Shariff Mohammed scored a goal each as Bandari beat Administration Police (AP) Bomet 2-1.

The law enforcers’ consolation goal was netted by Dickson Wambugu.

Harambee Stars trialist Peter Nzuki was on target as Nakumatt FC cruised through to the quarter finals with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Fortune Sacco FC.

Kennedy Onyango, Mustapha Mohammed and Cornelius Juma scored a goal each to ensure the shoppers sail through.
