Wanyama taken to hospital after stomach problem ahead of Southampton's UEFA Europa League playoff clash against Midtjylland

Tottenham target Victor Wanyama will not play for Southampton in their crucial European clash in Denmark on Thursday.

Wanyama was taken to hospital for checks after a stomach complaint that was diagnosed as an infection.

The withdrawal comes days after the Kenyan midfielder stunned St Mary’s chiefs by telling them he wanted to leave the club 24 hours before their Premier League fixture with Watford at the weekend.

Koeman said: “Victor didn’t travel with the team because he is ill and the latest update from the doctor is that he has a stomach infection.

“We found out Victor wasn’t coming on the trip this morning. I have to believe the doctor.

“I hope he will be available for the weekend but we will have to wait.”

Southampton gifted Midtjylland a vital away goal at St Mary’s which means they have to score on the continent to stand any chance of reaching the group stage.

Koeman admits his side will have to leave their attractive passing game behind and learn to play tough to continue their European tour.

He said: “We need to win the game because we had the best chances to win [the first leg]. If we play on our level then I am confident that we will go on in the Europa League.

“We always want to play attractive football but the main thing [on Thursday] is to win the game and how is not important.

“We know we can’t defend the result, we have to go for it — and we will go for it. That means we have to win the game or to draw the game more than 1-1.”

Saints are also sweating on the fitness of forward Sadio Mane after he picked up a hip injury in Sunday’s Vicarage Road bore draw.

SOUTHAMPTON (4-2-3-1): Stekelenburg; Cedric, Caulker, Fonte, Yoshida; Romeu, S Davis; Long, Ward-Prowse, Rodriguez; Pelle
