Lionel Messi's family attacked in stands of Copa America final

Members of Lionel Messi's family were reportedly attacked last night during Argentina's clash with Chile in the Copa America final.

The incident occurred during the first half when relatives of the Barcelona star were verbally targeted by supporters of host nation Chile, according to Goal.com.

The unsavoury altercation allegedly led to Messi's 28-year-old brother Rodrigo being hit by an opposition fan.

Security moved the Messi family to a television cabin during the interval for their own safety.

Sergio Aguero's family were also on the receiving end of abuse from supporters.

It turned out to be a disappointing night all around for Argentina as they tasted defeat on penalties in the tournament's showpiece.

Alexis Sanchez scored the decisive kick to seal a comfortable 4-1 shootout win for the competition's hosts.

The match itself finished 0-0, with the best chance of the night falling to Gonzalo Higuain, who failed to convert from a tight angle following good work from Ezequiel Lavezzi.
