Fifa officials to meet KPL and FKF today

Nairobi, Kenya: Fifa officials have jetted into the country for a crucial meeting with Kenyan Premier League (KPL) and Football Kenya Federation (FKF) today in a bid to resolve the stalemate on next year’s league.

The two local bodies have failed to agree on the number of teams to take part in the 2015 KPL season and today’s meeting is therefore crucial in breaking the stalemate.

FKF wants an 18-team competition while KPL insists on retaining 16 teams.

KPL goes into today’s meeting buoyed with the signing a five-year extension on the broadcast deal with SuperSport and therefore have something to offer teams going into next season.

Though FKF controls football in the country, they will find it difficult to convince Fifa on the need for an expanded league unless they are able to put money on the table especially to cater for an 18-team competition.

It is worth noting that the current 16-team league structure was agreed upon between Fifa, CAF, Ministry of Sports and the then Football Kenya Ltd in what is now known as the famous Cairo agreement.

Elsewhere, former AFC Leopards coach James Nandwa has joined Tanzanian side Coastal Union.
