Kenya Academy of Sports, Kenya Volleyball Federation target girls volleyball

Kenya Academy of Sports (KAS) and Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) have partnered to nurture and develop volleyball talent with the aim of forming a strong women's junior team.

The two have brought together 30 girls from schools around the country to undergo a three-week training and thereafter 20 players will be selected to join the academy.

Douglas Ratemo of KAS said the move to partner with KVF will enable more girls to realise their dreams.

"We have nurtured talents and seen our efforts bear fruit. Our players have gained employment because of their talent. Some have joined clubs and others made it to the national team. This partnership will open more opportunities," he said.

Some known names that went through KAS training are Gaudencia Makokha, who joined Pipeline and is a national team player and Sandra Jepkoech, who joined Kenya Police.

Others have earned scholarships at Kenyatta University and St Paul's University while a few went to Kaimosi and Eregi Teachers Training Colleges on scholarships. Jedida Njeri and Jacqueline Wairuta joined Barclays Bank with Naomi Too going to KCB. Players from Marsabit, Turkana, Karare and Moyale have also been invited.
