The fallout from the Monday killing of protesters continued yesterday with Opposition MPs threatening to ask their supporters to defend themselves against the State.

Five MPs from Nyanza region claimed that the killings were targeted at specific regions.

"We are troubled that the police have become a partisan tool for the executive; acting on instructions from Jubilee political leaders and have taken to promoting the political interests of the Government and frustrating the legitimate cause of Kenyans who believe IEBC must be overhauled to secure free and fair elections in the country," the MPs said in a statement.

"We will not take it kindly. We are telling President Uhuru Kenyatta to stop brutality. If he did not give the instructions for the shooting, who then gave the instructions? If he is not the one, he should tell us who gave the instructions," said ODM Chairman John Mbadi (Suba).

Present were MPs Oburu Oginga (nominated), Peter Kaluma (Homa Bay), David Ochieng (Ugenya) and Jared Opiyo (Awendo).

"We are going to talk to our people and look for ways of protecting ourselves as the police have failed to protect them. Instead of protecting life and property, they are busy killing our people. We are not saying no policeman was injured, but that does not justify the use of live bullets on innocent men, women and children," said Mr Oginga.

Four people are believed to have been shot dead in the protests by the Opposition to call for the disbandment of IEBC.

The Opposition claims the electoral body cannot be trusted to conduct free and fair elections in 2017.

The hardest hit areas were Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, Migori, and Kibra in Nairobi. Demonstrations were also held in Mombasa and Kisii.

The killings have been condemned by, among others, heads of seven foreign missions in the country.
