Newspapers in Education (N.i.E) launched its program at Maandani Secondary School on the 13th of January 2017. John Keah handed over the cheque towards the program to Annie Gitau, the NiE Manager at Standard Group during the exercise.
The Newspapers in Education program is designed to put newspapers in the hands of children around the country, and in so doing open-up their world to what is happening around them, and beyond them, outside their classrooms and community. They have the world at their fingertips.
The establishment of the Mathias Keah Foundation (MKF) was inspired by the life of the Late Hon. Mathias Benedict Keah, who dedicated his life to national, regional and international development through his professional, political, business and social – cultural work.
The Late Keah served as the Member of Parliament for Kaloleni Constituency in Kilifi County for 15 years from 1987 to 2002, and also served in the Government of Kenya as an Assistant Minister in the for Finance, Lands & Settlement and Transport & Communication Ministries.
It was through his work that he was able to contribute to the development of various socio-cultural issues including education, empowerment, health, conservation, culture and arts and spirituality. Following his death on 25th June, 2005, family and friends agreed to honor the Late Keah by establishing the Mathias Keah Foundation which would continue the work he started and carry on his legacy.
One of the objectives of the Mathias Keah Foundation is to offer education scholarships and sponsorships to bright and needy students, as well as boost the education levels especially in Kaloleni, where the late Mathis Keah worked.
It is in this spirit that the Foundation has sponsored the Newspapers in Education program to run in Maadani Secondary School.
The NiE newspapers is supplied to the schools once a week & is used as a teaching tool. This helps the pupils and students improve their reading, writing and comprehension skills. This in-turn, will help them better understand the questions during exams, an hence give the correct answers.
The program is currently running in various schools around the country.
