Nyahururu District Hospital has been ranked top in the fight against transmission of HIV from mother to child.
A research by a Non-Governmental Organisation, Centre for Health Solutions, found that the hospital had recorded no case of Mother-Child HIV infections in the whole of central region.
The research showed that all the 90 children born by HIV positive mothers tested negative after 18 months. The hospital beat 192 health facilities that offer HIV and Aids related services, drawn from six counties in the central region.
Speaking during celebrations to mark this year’s World Aids Day, Governor Joshua Irungu attributed the achievement to the strengthened capacity of the hospital staff and community health workers who follow up on patients even at their homes.
“We have also been sensitising people at the village level on the need to deliver at hospital in addition to focusing on our vision of having a peaceful and a prosperous model county. We now have a testimony that it is doable,” said the governor.
