God saved me from death- Suzanna Owiyo's husband

City News

Erick Ounga

Suzanna Owiyo’s husband, Erick Ounga, is the latest victim of the rising insecurity in Kisumu City. Ounga who is currently recuperating at the Aga Khan Hospital says he is grateful to God for his miraculous survival. He was reportedly shot at his home near Kiboswa Market by suspected criminals at 11pm.

The Kisumu-based businessman who deals in real estate says he had just parted ways with Kisumu West MP Olago Aluoch when he was attacked by five men who accosted him minutes after he parked his vehicle in his compound.

“One of the attackers actually told me in Dholuo that they had come to finish me before shooting me in the right arm,” Ounga said, adding that, “I bled a lot, but I’m now okay, just nursing the gunshot wounds.” He explained that, “They did not steal anything from me.”

Confirming the incident, Nyanza regional police boss, Charles Narangwi, said they are investigating the shooting incident, but complained over lack of cooperation from Kisumu residents. He claimed residents do not report criminal cases to the police.

“Residents should report these cases for investigation and action,” said Narangwi.

There has been an increase in burglary cases in Manyatta estate forcing some tenants to relocate to safer areas.

Kisumu City Residents Voice Association Chair Audi Ogada claimed the security situation in the lakeside town improved after they raised the alarm a few months ago, prompting the government to transfer non-performing police officers.

He says that things have begun to deteriorate again.

“In the past one month, there has been a steady increase of crime in areas like Milimani and Riat Hills, where residents are being robbed at gunpoint,” said Ogada.

He called upon the leadership of Kisumu City to ensure that junior officers are supervised.

“Every police post should have a scorecard,” said Ogada, warning that investors who had developed confidence in the region would be scared away by insecurity.
